Starring: John Lithgow, Lolita Davidovich
Director: Brian De Palma
1992
plot:
dr nix had some interesting research 20 years ago, he studied and categorized multiple personalities. In order to do this he need a test subject and what better than his own son. Abusing and traumatizing him in order to create the multiples. There is josh the scared little boy, Margo the protective woman, carter his own personality and Cain, one bad mutherfucker who only comes around when something bad is going to happen( this usually means killing someone. When dr nix was caught buying babies he jumped bail and left the country, now thought to be dead but the babies are going missing again and dear old carter is right in the middle but has no idea how or why. He only knows that Cain is back and he’s doing some horrible shit.
My opinion:
This is a well scripted and well directed psychological thriller but what really stands out is Lithgow. He is so waste in 3rd rock it isn’t even funny. To play 4 completely different personalities with different body languages and all is just an amazing acting job. And as the Cain personality he is one cold and creepy mofo. The death sequences are tight and the support do some solid acting as well. There are some nice twists in the script and the score is spot on for conveying the mood and state of mind of carter in his different characters.
What lets this movie down though is the holes. There is no real insight into the Cain character only that he is bad and kills. I would have liked to see some real development in the other personalities and maybe even have some kind of connection with the carter main personality rather than it all be Cain who in effect is a supporting character.
Its not the best movie in the world but it is enjoyable and there is some real nice touches by Lithgow that just makes me smile to watch him act in this movie. If you haven’t seen it check it out but don’t expect the world.
AOD gives it 6/10
