We reported a while ago that 'Final Destination' director James Wong and his long-time partner Glenn Morgan had the brilliant idea to remake the 70's rat/revenge film 'Willard', about a boy living in the slums that can communicate with the rodents. New Line jumped at the chance to see the idea become reality, and now casting is well underway. As reported previously, bizarre actor/skinniest man on earth Crispin Glover has pulled his role from the casting hat, now three others join him. Namely R. Lee ('Full Metal Jacket', 'The Frighteners') Ermey (I wonder if he'll play a drill sergeant?), Jackie ('The Dead Zone') Burroghs, and Laura ('Mullholand Drive') Harring.
The filmmakers have decided that whenever possible, they're going to use real rats for the scenes, so I hope none of the previously mentioned new additions are squeamish (wouldn't it be hilarious if it were Ermey out of all of 'em?). They'll have over 500 real rats throughout the shoot, and the main rat characters from the the first film, Ben and Socrates, will be in the remake as well, though probably not played by the same rodents. None of the original cast will be back.
Oh, and Michael Jackson's first #1 hit, 'Ben', will be featured in the film. The singer originally wrote the song to convey the touching story of a boy and his murderous rats for the 1972 sequel to 'Willard', sneakily entitled 'Ben'.
