Hey everyone, after seeing the excellent Japanese horror film "Battle Royale" I have become interested in other films they have. Well, one of these is the zombie action movie Versus.
The plot of Versus is something about these people who are supposed to play a part in opening a gateway to Hell. Well one of them is in jail, who is the hero of the movie, and the other guys are after him to kill him. Well they break him out of jail and they chase him into the woods. Well the police chase after him because he's killed 42 people and the other guys that broke him out want to kill him. Well he gets the help of a girl who the other people were holding hostage.
Well, there are 666 gateways to Hell, and in the woods in Japan lies the 444 gateway. In the woods one of the guys who is after our hero kills our hero and this makes him superhuman. So the girl who was with our hero gives him a taste of her blood and it brings him back to life and he's superhuman as well. So now we have two superhumans against each other and plenty of other people. Well in order for the bad dude to get full control over that gateway to Hell he needs someone's blood. Well he needed the girls, but since she gave it to our hero so he could live again she is useless. So now the bad dude is after our hero because he needs his blood as well. While they battle they notice that all the people they killed are starting to rise from the dead and tons of zombies start to show as a result from the gateway to Hell.
Well, I hope I didn't lose anyone. If you've seen one of the recent Japanese horror films, whether it be Battle Royale, The Ring, Audition, or even Versus you know how great these movies are. This movie is pretty much a non-stop action film with Matrix style fighting and plenty of gun shooting also with buckets of gore along the lines of something we'd see in a Fulci film, mixed in with zombies.
Needless to says this is supposed to be a great film and I've been wanting to see it. They have 2 DVD's of this out, one is the bootleg edition, and it's around 30 bucks, but the picture and sound quality are horrible. There is also the official Region 2 release, but it's close to 60 bucks and the special features are useless unless you can understand Japanese.
Well, it turns out that Media Blasters has the rights to Versus and they are planning a Theatrical release here in the states. Though it's only going to be a limited release, so hopefully it'll come around. I know The Devil's Backbone came to one theater around here and it stayed in theaters here for a week, so I missed it. If Versus comes, I'm definitely going to see it.
Now to the DVD release. According to what Media Blasters say, there was tons of footage that they have edited out of the Region 2 releases, so we are going to get an even more brutal Director's Cut. This is just a dream come true. I will definitely be getting this!
