When Ottawa, Ontario native Lee Gordon Demarbre and some of his closest friends set out to create a five-minute trailer for a non-existent movie entitled "Harry Knuckles" back in '96, they had little idea that six years later, they would be preparing to take their first feature to Cannes with a slew of awards in tow. "Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter", the latest opus from director Lee and company, is, to hear Lee describe it, "a kung-fu action comedy musical horror... with lesbians!" Two years and 40,000 dollars in the making, "Jesus Christ" is the kind of movie that Italian director Jess Franco ("Vampyros Lesbos") might have made had he teamed up with famed HK chopsocky giants the Shaw Brothers.
Written by Lee's long-time collaborator Ian Driscoll and starring best buds Phil Caracas and Josh Grace, "Jesus Christ" is currently touring film festivals and cities all across North America, having already played Slamdance in January, where it garnered an Honorable Mention. And now, the boys are off to the French Riviera where they'll unleash their creation to the Continent at the granddaddy of all film festivals.
